Brazil! Brazil! The Birth of Modernism

The Linnean Society and Royal Academy of Arts

Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition

Thursday 13th February 2025

In the early 20th century, a new modern art was emerging in Brazil. From the 1910s to the 1970s, Brazilian artists began adapting contemporary trends, traditions and international influences, allowing this new form of modern art to emerge. These artists were influenced and informed by the vibrant cultures, identities and landscapes of Brazil, along with everyday life. Indigenous identity and Afro-Brazilian experience were also among the influences drawn upon for their work. This group of artists looked inward to create a new vision of modernist art that put South America’s rich cultural resources to the forefront. The Royal Academy invites audiences to expand their view of Brazilian Modernism by delving into the works of Brazilian artists that have received less exposure in the UK, such as women artists Tarsila do Amaral and Anita Malfatti, self-taught artists Alfredo Volpi and Djanira, Afro-Brazilian artist Rubem Valentim and performance artist, Flávio de Carvalho.

The lecture by Tom Parsons will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at a restaurant nearby.
