Edvard Munch Portraits
by Richard Stemp
St Anne’s Church, Soho and the National Portrait Gallery
Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition
14th May 2025
This intimate and extraordinary exhibition will focus on Edvard Munch and his portraiture. Regarded as one of the 19th and 20th centuries’ greatest portraitists, Munch regularly produced portraits of friends and family, lovers and fellow artists, collectors and patrons. He also painted a range of self-portraits. His art is flowing with colour, energy and a direct engagement with the sitter, all of which has had a marked influence on the portrait genre.
The National Portrait Gallery will be the first to focus on this aspect of Munch’s work. The exhibition will contextualize how Munch painted his portraits and will provide understanding of how the pieces have become examples or icons of the human condition despite being based on direct observation of individuals.
The lecture by Dr Richard Stemp will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at Fumo, Covent Garden.
