Entangled Pasts, 1768-now
Art, Colonialism and Change
The Linnean Society and Royal Academy of Arts
Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition
10th April 2024
The Royal Academy of Art presents a powerful exhibition detailing the role of art in shaping narratives surrounding colonialism, empire, enslavement, resistance and abolition. This exhibition will feature over 100 major contemporary and historic works from artists such as J.M.W. Turner, Ellen Gallagher, Joshua Reynolds, Yinka Shonibare, John Singleton Copley, Hew Locke and more. Detailing works from the past 250 years, this expansive exhibition will marry contemporary and historical works together in a discussion of representation through history. The RA’s ongoing research into its colonial past shapes this exhibition and engages with the themes of identity and belonging through migration, exchange and artistic traditions.
The lecture by Helen Oakden will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at José Pizarro in the Royal Academy of Arts.
