Reflecting on the Power of Art: Diego Velázquez

By Dr Richard Stemp

Wednesday 24th June at 6pm

We are running a series of live and online lectures and we do hope you will bring an aperitivo and join us for an hour before dinner. We have chosen subjects to stimulate new interests and conversation, ready for the imminent return to socializing. We invite you to join 15 minutes early to hear information on AHA’s plans for the future and there will be time for questions and answers at the end.

Reflecting on the Power of Art: Diego Velázquez

Velázquez was undoubtedly Spain’s greatest artist and arguably one of the all time greats anywhere.  The brilliance of his technique was enhanced by the depth of his understanding of the nature of art and the possibilities of painting. Throughout his career he was fascinated by mirrors – by the parallel between the creation of an image as a reflection and of painting as a mirror of the world. This lecture will inevitably include his most famous images, the ‘Rokeby Venus’ and ‘Las Meninas’, but it will also look at other paintings where he includes mirrors, or reflects on the art of others.
