Turner and Constable
Lecture by Dr Richard Stemp
St James the Less Church and Tate Britain
Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition
25th November 2025
250 years since the birth of two of Britain’s greatest artists, Turner and Constable, the Tate brings an exhibition exploring the lives and legacies of these two pivotal artists. Born within a year of each other, Turner and Constable vied to use landscape art as a means to reflect the changing world around them. The two artists were raised in two separate worlds – Turner humbly born into the heart of gritty Georgian London while Constable was born the son of a wealthy merchant – both were determined to forge their paths as artists. Despite their different upbringings, both artists had a profound connection to nature. The gallery urges audiences to discover the unexpected sides to both artists, chronicling their careers through the intimate insights of sketchbooks and personal items, along with powerful and dynamic paintings and expressive sketches of both artists shown together side by side.
The lecture by Dr Richard Stemp will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at Osteria Dell’Angolo.
